There
are two principal routes in Florida by which adults can earn a
high school diploma—by either completing their credits through
the adult high school credit program or by taking and passing
the General Educational Development (GED) Test. The adult high
school credit program provides an opportunity for adults 16 years
of age and older to return to school and earn a high school diploma.
The requirements are the same as those in high school. A state
board rule stipulates that high school credits awarded to adults
are based on demonstrated mastery of the student performance standards.
It further states that courses for high school credit leading
to a high school diploma shall be of sufficient length and content
to permit a level of competence at least equivalent to that required
of other students in public high schools.
Through the GED program, adult students participate in preparation
classes to ready themselves to take the GED tests. These tests
are designed to measure, as nearly as possible, the major and
lasting outcomes (skills and concepts) generally associated with
four years of regular high school instruction. The five sub-tests
include language arts writing, social studies, science, language
arts reading, and mathematics. Additionally, the language arts
writing test contains and essay question. Thus, the test battery
corresponds to the general framework of most high school curricula. |

the 2003-2004 school year 38,887 students participated in the
adult high school credit program and 2,368 students registered

The
GED program has provided adults with the opportunity to move forward
professionally and educationally. Nationwide data indicates that:
More than 90% of all United State’s employers consider those
who earned their GED Diploma the same as traditional graduates
with regard to hiring, salary, and opportunity for advancement.
97% of colleges and universities accept the GED credential as
equivalent to a traditional high school diploma.
Those who have a high school diploma or GED credential realize
a 35% increase ($7,400 differential) in median annual earnings
over those who do not graduate. |
