The ESOL/ESL program provides courses that enable adults to acquire English-language proficiency. Through a SCANS (Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills) based curriculum that integrates workplace competencies with language functions and relevant grammar, students learn to use English to achieve their goals. The purpose is to improve the employability skills of the state’s workforce and enhance the state’s ability to have in place a trained workforce. Students are challenged to use critical-thinking skills to transfer the classroom experience to daily life. The competency-based program offers nine levels of general language skills plus additional courses for specific needs. At the adult centers located through Miami-Dade County, a uniform assessment system monitors the program and facilitates the transfer of students from one center to another. The Dade County Adult Assessment System for ESOL council advices the district on issues related to the implementation of the ESOL program. The council is compromised of teachers, school-based administrators, and district staff. The VESOL program creates an educational environment conducive to the exploration and development of future occupational skills. The curriculum integrates life and workplace skills topics with language functions linked to relevant grammatical structures so that the student may achieve a degree of competency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the English language. The VESOL program provides basic knowledge of the history and culture of the United States and teaches the necessary skills so the Limited English Proficient (LEP) student may successfully continue his/her vocational education as well as secure gainful employment in the American workforce. |
There were 50,477 students enrolled in adult ESOL programs in the 2003-2004 schhol year.
